Emphysema Chronic Bronchitis: Lung Institute
Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are different kinds of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emphysema and chronic bronchitis can be difficult to tell apart, but each presents problems with other and breathing lung symptoms. The difference between emphysema and chronic bronchitis is based on how the lungs are affected by each disease. The dearth of a remedy for either emphysema or chronic bronchitis doesn't mean a lack of available treatment.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) include colds, influenza and diseases of the throat, nose or sinuses. Saline nose spray and larger volume nasal washes are becoming more popular as one of several treatment options for URTIs, and they've been demonstrated to have some effectiveness for chronic sinusitis and following nasal surgery. This is a well conducted systematic review and the conclusion seems reliable. Acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) include colds, flu and infections of the throat, nose or sinuses. This review found no evidence for or against the use of increased fluids .
What is COPD?
COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary (PULL-mun-ary) ailment, is a progressive disease that makes it difficult to breathe. Long term exposure to other lung irritants such as dust, chemical fumes, or air pollution also may promote COPD. At precisely the same time, carbon dioxide (a waste gas) moves in the capillaries into the air sacs. In COPD, less air flows in and out of the airways because of one or more of the following: In the United States, the term "COPD" contains two primary ailments emphysema (em-fih SE-mum) and chronic bronchitis (bronKItis). This damage can also ruin the walls of the air sacs, resulting in larger and fewer air sacs instead of many miniature ones. Most people who have COPD have both emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

What is Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis?
Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are recurring (long term) lung diseases that make it difficult to breathe. Both diseases are chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), meaning they're conditions that cause a constraint in airflow. With emphysema, the tiny air sacs in the lungs become damaged. With chronic bronchitis are inflamed and generate lots of mucus.
Tobacco smoking is the most common cause of COPD, with numerous other variables including air pollution and genetics playing a smaller part. The most common symptoms of COPD are shortness of breath, sputum production, and a cough that is productive. COPD is more common than any other lung disorder as a cause of cor pulmonale. Badly ventilated cooking fires fueled by coal or biomass fuels including wood and animal dung, lead in developing countries and are one of the most common causes of COPD to indoor air pollution.
